Halcion
A mild sedative/anxiolytic medication which reduces the anxiety associated with surgical dental treatment.
Two tablets should be takenn at bedtime the evening prior to your procedure, two tablets are taken one hour prior to your appointment, and one tablet at bedtime the night after your procedure to help you sleep. This medication will make you drowsy, and you should not drive while under its influence.

Naprosyn
A strong, non-narcotic pain medicine which is long lasting and reduces inflammation in addition to eliminating most pain from dental surgical procedures.
Should be taken as soon after the procedure as possible, while still numb. Will not cause further drowsiness and is the primary pain medicine. Continue to take one tablet twice per day until all are used.

Tylenol 3 and Vicodin
Strong, narcotic pain medicines which serve as backup pain medicines.
Take only if there is pain which is not relieved by Naprosyn. Can be taken concurrently, and the appropriate dose is 2 tablets every 4 – 6 hours. Will make you drowsy, and can cause stomach upset, nausea and constipation in some people.

Zithromax
A broad spectrum antibiotic which is administered to reduce the instance of post-operative infection.
Packaged for ease of use, two tablets are taken immediately after surgery, one tablet is taken for the next four days.

Peridex
A prescription strength mouthwash which is prescribed to reduce the incidence of post-operative infection.
Rinse with one capful three times per day for 5 days following surgery. Prolonged use can alter the way your food tastes, and impart a light stain on your teeth, switch to listerine after 5 days.

Periostat (Doxycycline Hyclate 20 mg)
Periostat is a very low dose of the antibiotic doxycycline. At such low levels, doxycycline does not kill germs, but it has another very beneficial effect. It blocks the enzyme that your body produces when periodontal disease is active, which causes breakdown of tissue in the affected site. So it slows the progression of the destructive disease process while awaiting surgical treatment.
It is imperative that higher doses are not substituted for this medication, as long-term antibiotic use will reduce both beneficial and harmful bacteria.

Flexeryl (Cyclobenzeprine)
is a muscle relaxer which is prescribed for patients who clench and grind their teeth at night. It is very safe, and unlike valium and similar drugs, does not lead to dependance and lose efficacy over time.
Flexeryl can cause drowsiness, and should be taken before going to bed at night. The first few times this medication is taken, it may result in lingering drowsiness in the morning. The typical dose is 5 or 10 mg taken approximately two hours before bedtime.

BEST PERIODONTIST IN MD

See What Our Patients Are Saying

I have been going to South River Periodontics for years. I can't say enough about Dr. Robert Bouffard, DDS. His expertise and chair-side manner are positively beyond compare. I actually enjoy going to the dentist! If you're searching for a fabulous dentist who takes the time to actually get to know his patients and provides the best in dental treatment, one who will also explain procedures to you and treat you with the utmost respect and care, look no further than Dr. Robert Bouffard!

Linda Lee Annapolis, MD Dental Patient

Dr. Bouffard extracted my son's wisdom teeth when my son was only 13 and did such a fabulous job. He took his time to explain the procedure and put my son at great ease. Now my son needs an implant to replace a tooth lost when he was 9 and there is little anxiety since he trusts Dr. Bouffard so much. We are so happy to have met him at Maple Ave Family Dentistry in Barrington.

Eileen Brady Annapolis, MD Dental Patient

I was referred to Dr. Bouffard six months after hitting my face on the steering wheel in a car accident. Although I had been seen several times for face pain since the accident, it was still unclear about what was going on. Dr. Bouffard listened closely to all my continued troubles and within 5 minutes of meeting me figured out that my upper jaw had actually been dislocated and should’ve been wired shut to heal properly. I was upset but relieved to finally have some answers and a solid plan for treating my pain. Dr. Bouffard worked with one of "his guys" to construct a splint that I wore for several months to provide support and structure for my healing jaw. He has continued to be involved in my healing process, performing two implant surgeries and sending me on to an orthodontist for braces to further strengthen the integrity of my jaw. Two years later, he continues to check in with me and show genuine concern about how I am feeling. I am truly grateful to have been referred to him.
